Chris Sutton criticises Brendan Rodgers after his resignation from Celtic

Brendan Rodgers resigns as Celtic manager after defeat to Hearts

Brendan Rodgers has resigned from his position as Celtic manager less than 24 hours after a damaging 2-1 defeat to Hearts left the team eight points behind their rivals in the Scottish Premiership, reports BritPanorama.

The defeat marked a low point for Celtic, who have struggled this season and have seen Hearts mount a surprising title challenge. Underperforming since the start, the team has failed to reach the levels of dominance they have maintained in previous years.

Rodgers’ departure followed a series of behind-the-scenes tensions, exacerbated by his pointed criticism of the club’s hierarchy and his dissatisfaction with the quality of new signings. On Monday night, he made the decision to step down, a move that many saw as inevitable after his growing frustrations became public.

Chris Sutton, a former Celtic striker, reacted to the news, suggesting that Rodgers’ comments earlier in the season hinted at discord. “It is astonishing but I think there is a general feeling after Brendan Rodgers said his piece before the season didn’t get the players in which he would have liked, the desired quality,” Sutton stated.

Rodgers had previously expressed his disappointment in press conferences, citing a lack of recruitment that would allow Celtic to compete effectively, especially after their UEFA Champions League participation last season. “They have had a poor start to the season, out of the Champions League and even domestically, not as dominant as they should have been,” Sutton indicated.

Celtic’s situation has led to a significant change in leadership, with club icon Martin O’Neill returning as interim manager, joined by former player Shaun Maloney. O’Neill, who previously led Celtic to numerous successes in the early 2000s, will be tasked with revitalising the side ahead of their next match against Falkirk on Wednesday.

As Celtic looks to rebound from this tumultuous period, the challenge will be to rediscover the sharpness and cohesion that has defined their recent history. Those in the football community will watch closely to see how this new chapter unfolds.
