Chris Eubank Jr makes weight ahead of rematch with Conor Benn

Chris Eubank Jr has successfully made weight for his rematch with Conor Benn, registering 159.1lb at a private weigh-in ahead of Saturday’s bout, thus avoiding any financial penalties, reports BritPanorama.

This marks a significant turnaround for Eubank, who earlier this year missed the 160-pound middleweight limit by 0.05lb and faced a substantial fine of £375,000 as a result.

In contrast, Benn, who usually fights at the 147-pound welterweight limit, weighed in at 159.4lb, the heaviest of his professional career. The fighters will need to adhere to a rehydration clause that mandates they remain under a 170-pound cap at a secondary weigh-in on fight day.

This rematch has been marked by escalating theatrics, particularly following a silent protest staged by Eddie Hearn during the final press conference, in response to Eubank’s past interruptions. However, the drama belies the gravity of the contest at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where a packed audience is anticipated.

Penalties for exceeding the weight limit could amount to £100,000 for every pound over, a factor both fighters are keenly aware of given their previous experiences with weight-related fines.

As the fight date approaches, the stakes remain high. Benn has boasted that he purchased a new Rolls Royce following Eubank’s earlier fine, an assertion that Eubank addressed directly after making weight. “You guys got your wish, you got your $500k,” he stated, reflecting the ongoing tension.

Eubank also took the opportunity to mock Benn’s claim, stating, “You bought a Rolls Royce, congratulations. You’re only getting one Rolls Royce this year, mate.” The banter underscores the rivalry’s charged atmosphere.

Chris Eubank Sr was present alongside his son at the press conference, addressing speculation regarding financial incentives for his attendance. He categorically denied claims of being compensated for appearing, asserting, “They are lying to you [about receiving money], and if you are spouting what they told you then they are a liar.” He emphasized his role as a supportive father rather than an entertainer driven by financial gain.

As the fighters prepare for their showdown, the dynamics of relationships and competition promise to intertwine in what has become a notable event in British boxing.

This rematch is not just a contest of skill but a clash of narratives, where every jab and counter tells a deeper story about ambition and rivalry. It reminds us how personal vendettas can electrify a sport, drawing in fans and amplifying the drama.
