Chelsea training ground evacuated briefly due to false alarm ahead of Sunderland match

Chelsea’s first-team players and staff were briefly evacuated from their Cobham training base on Friday afternoon after an alarm in the swimming pool area raised fears of a possible chlorine leak, reports BritPanorama.

The incident occurred shortly before the squad’s scheduled training session ahead of their Premier League clash with Sunderland. Players were already changed and preparing to head onto the pitch when the alert sounded, prompting a quick exit from the main building as a safety precaution.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly, with fire crews arriving within minutes to investigate the source of the alarm, which had been automatically triggered in the hydrotherapy section of the complex. Chelsea later confirmed that the evacuation was purely precautionary and that no one had been in danger.

“Fire services responded to an automatically triggered alarm at Chelsea FC’s Cobham training facility,” a club spokesman remarked. Emergency services confirmed a false alarm, allowing all staff and players to safely return after the clearing procedures.

This incident adds to a series of unusual occurrences at Chelsea’s £20 million training complex in 2025. Earlier in the year, reports emerged that staff had been unable to locate £30,000 worth of camera equipment, leading to an investigation by Surrey Police to determine whether the equipment had been misplaced or stolen.

Located in Cobham since 2005, the 140-acre facility features advanced training environments, including multiple pitches, gyms, and recovery areas designed to support peak athletic performance. Despite Friday’s brief evacuation, the team continued their training uninterrupted outside and is set to face Sunderland at 3pm on Saturday.

As Chelsea’s facilities combine sophistication with strict planning for integration into the countryside, it’s a reminder of how modern training complexes must navigate not just athletic demands, but the unexpected challenges that arise within such high-stakes environments.
