Charlton Athletic vs Portsmouth match abandoned following fan’s death

The Championship fixture between Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth was abandoned this afternoon after a fan died during the match at The Valley, reports BritPanorama.

Saturday’s early kick-off, starting at 12:30 PM, was halted after only 12 minutes when match official Matthew Donohue stopped the game to allow medical staff to attend to a supporter in the Covered End Lower section. Both sets of players were instructed to leave the field as treatment continued.

The official decision to call off the match came roughly 45 minutes after the initial stoppage. The club later confirmed that the fan had died in an update to fellow supporters.

A club statement announced: “The club are devastated to report that a Charlton Athletic supporter has died following a medical emergency during today’s game at The Valley against Portsmouth. The match was halted in the 12th minute while the supporter received treatment and was subsequently postponed. The club would like to thank the Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could, but sadly the supporter later passed away in hospital.”

Emergency personnel attended to the fan after fellow supporters alerted stewards to the situation. Medical professionals administered care for approximately ten minutes before the individual was placed on a stretcher and moved to a private location for further treatment. Supporters from both Charlton and Portsmouth applauded as the affected fan was taken from the stands.

Charlton defender Lloyd Jones had already received a booking in the opening exchanges. Prior to kick-off, a minute’s applause for club legends Billy Bonds and Marvin Hinton took place. Fans and clubs alike took to social media to extend their best wishes for a quick recovery for the individual.

Charlton Athletic’s initial statement confirmed the abandonment of the match due to the medical emergency, expressing gratitude for the patience and understanding shown by supporters. “Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter affected and thank our medical team and first responders,” the statement read, noting that information regarding rescheduling will be provided in due course.

Portsmouth echoed these sentiments, stating that “our thoughts and best wishes are with the individual involved and their family.” The EFL also responded, writing: “Sending our very best wishes to the supporter affected.”

This incident underscores the unpredictability that sometimes emerges on match days, reminding fans and players alike of the fragility of life amid the excitement of sport.
