Blackburn vs Sheffield Wednesday game abandoned due to extreme weather
A Championship game between Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday has been abandoned due to extreme weather, reports BritPanorama.
The players were removed from the pitch around the 60-minute mark, with Blackburn leading 1-0 at Ewood Park. Heavy rain had resulted in standing water on the surface, prompting the decision to suspend the match before confirming whether it would continue.
Concerns over player safety were paramount, as the ball’s movement was significantly hindered by the conditions. Referee Ruebyn Ricardo held discussions with both managers while the players returned to the changing room. Notably, this is the second instance of a home game for Blackburn being halted in recent weeks.
In September, a match against Ipswich Town had also been abandoned due to similarly severe weather conditions. On that occasion, Blackburn was ahead 1-0 against a 10-man Ipswich side when the game was stopped due to a waterlogged pitch.
The disruption reflects ongoing challenges related to unpredictable weather, as highlighted by the Met Office issuing a yellow warning for the impending weather, which poses potential risks to life due to flooding and fast-flowing water. Residents and businesses in the affected regions may experience damage and power outages, with forecasted rainfall ranging between 20-40mm across much of the warning area.
This latest abandonment serves as a reminder of the persistent issues facing football fixtures amid changing climate patterns, bringing both logistical challenges and heightened concerns for player and spectator safety.
