Carlos Alcaraz admits he expects to lose world number one ranking to Jannik Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz anticipates ranking change amid clay campaign

Carlos Alcaraz has candidly conceded that he anticipates surrendering his world number one position to Jannik Sinner during the forthcoming clay-court campaign, reports BritPanorama.

The Spanish star made the frank admission following his opening victory at the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday, where he defeated Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-3 in just over an hour. Alcaraz acknowledged that he exceeded his own expectations, stating, “It’s been almost one year since the last match that I played on clay. To be honest, I missed it.” He added, “I surprised myself with the level. I thought I was going to play a little bit worse.”

Despite his first-round success, Alcaraz is acutely aware of the mathematical reality that he faces. “To be honest, I’m gonna lose the No. 1 of the world,” he stated. “I don’t know if it’s going to be in this tournament or the next one.” The challenge stems from Alcaraz’s tremendous run on clay last season, in which he secured three titles—including notable victories at Monte Carlo, Rome, and Roland Garros—leaving him with a considerable number of points to defend.

In contrast, Sinner enters this clay season with the advantage of having no points to protect from previous tournaments, as he missed the opening segment of the clay swing last year due to a suspension. His successful start saw him dispatch Ugo Humbert with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 victory. Alcaraz remarked on the points differential, recognizing that “even if I defend them, Jannik is going to add some points in these tournaments that he doesn’t have to defend any points in these tournaments.”

Alcaraz has stated that, despite the looming pressure of the ranking battle, he is not preoccupied with the top position. “For me, the No. 1 is not in my mind right now, I’m just trying to feel the best way or as good as I can on a clay court,” he said.

With Alcaraz advancing to face either Tomas Etcheverry or Terence Atmane in the next round, it remains to be seen how the evolving matchups will affect the dynamic at the top of the rankings. Meanwhile, former doubles star Jamie Murray expressed confidence in Alcaraz’s performance, noting that he appeared “very focused” and displayed “good energy” throughout the match.

As the clay-court campaign intensifies, the narrative of rising stars and shifting ranks continues to unfold, reminding us how swiftly fortunes can turn in the world of tennis.
