Brundle questions Ferrari's delay in addressing Hamilton's engineering struggles

Martin Brundle critiques Ferrari’s handling of Lewis Hamilton

Former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle has voiced his surprise that Ferrari did not modify Lewis Hamilton’s engineering arrangements sooner during the seven-time world champion’s initial season with the team, reports BritPanorama.

Speaking at the 2026 Autosport Awards, Brundle noted, “I’m surprised it probably didn’t happen a bit earlier, really, judging by all the things that were going on last year.” His comments come in the wake of a challenging inaugural campaign for Hamilton at Ferrari, marked by significant communication issues.

Brundle highlighted the apparent tension between Hamilton and his race engineer Riccardo Adami throughout the 2025 season, asserting that “something needed to change” given the difficulties faced. Observers noted communication issues that contributed to the lack of synergy during races.

The Sky Sports analyst emphasised the need for a team that understands “Lewis speak” to enhance communication effectiveness, stating, “Lewis needs to go there with a team so that at least they understand what it all means, and to interpret what Lewis really needs behind the wheel.”

Despite attempts to present a positive image, Brundle felt that underlying problems were clear to observers. “Just listening to the radio and watching the performance… something needed to change,” he added, underscoring the challenges faced by both driver and race engineer.

Ferrari has since confirmed that Adami will take on a different role within the organisation. The team issued a statement thanking him for his contributions and wishing him success in his new position. Details regarding Hamilton’s next permanent race engineer have yet to be announced, though Carlo Santi will assume the role temporarily during upcoming Barcelona testing sessions. Reports suggest Ferrari may pursue a former McLaren employee for the permanent appointment.

Hamilton’s first season with Ferrari was notably difficult, as he failed to achieve a single podium finish throughout the year, securing a sprint race victory in China instead. This marked a stark departure from his successful tenure at Mercedes, where he was supported by long-time race engineer Peter Bonnington, now Head of Trackside Performance with the Brackley team.

The anticipation builds as the 2026 Formula 1 season prepares to commence with the Australian Grand Prix from 6-8 March, closely followed by the Chinese Grand Prix. Amidst the team changes and adjustments, the coming races may be pivotal for Hamilton’s aspirations for a competitive turnaround.
