Vandalism at Bruce McLaren’s grave in Auckland causes distress

The graves of motorsport pioneer Bruce McLaren and his family have been repeatedly defaced at Waikumete Cemetery in West Auckland, causing significant distress to his daughter Amanda, reports BritPanorama.

Representatives from the Bruce McLaren Trust confirmed that the vandalism affected headstones of the Formula One team founder, his wife Patricia, parents, sister, and brother-in-law. The damage included gold paint being sprayed across the headstones and toy cars affixed to the graves, notably affecting McLaren and his wife, who passed away in 2016.

Michael Clark from the Trust revealed that Amanda McLaren was “very upset” by the disturbance, highlighting the personal impact of the act beyond her father’s lasting sporting legacy. The Trust expressed bewilderment at the motives behind targeting the graves, stating they were “lost for words” as to why someone would inflict such damage.

The vandalism has been recurring, with the perpetrator returning multiple times to remove protective coverings applied to the monuments. George Stewart-Dalzell from Grave Guardians discovered the damage and was “devastated” by what she encountered. She noted that approximately 14 other monuments had received similar treatment with gel bleach and paint, indicating a possible misguided attempt at restoration.

Stewart-Dalzell suggested that the culprit might have perceived the graves’ condition as a cause for intervention, stating: “Someone has obviously decided that the graves are just in a sad state and that they know what they’re doing,” indicating a belief that they were helping rather than causing harm.

Clark also raised concerns about security measures at the cemetery while confirming plans to compensate volunteers who restored the graves, despite their refusal of payment. He praised their dedication to repairing the damaged monuments, indicating a sense of community commitment amid the distressing circumstances.

McLaren established his infamous racing team in England in 1963, achieving their maiden grand prix victory in Belgium five years later before accumulating 10 constructors’ and 12 drivers’ championships. The Auckland-born racing driver was killed in a crash in 1970, becoming one of Formula One’s most celebrated figures. His legacy endures, but this vandalism serves as a stark reminder of how cherished memories can be marred by thoughtless actions.
