Brighton salvages late draw against West Ham

Brighton secured a last-minute equaliser in their Premier League clash against West Ham after an astonishing effort from Jared Bowen, who scored in what could be described as a tackle, reports BritPanorama.

Georginio Rutter converted in injury time to ensure the match ended in a 1-1 draw. West Ham had taken the lead in the 73rd minute through Bowen, whose improvised strike appeared to catch the Brighton defence off guard. It would have marked only the second victory for West Ham over Brighton in their last 17 league meetings.

Bowen executed a deft maneuver to bypass Seagulls defender Ferdi Kadioglu, guiding the ball past goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and into the net. However, Brighton’s persistence paid off late in the game when Rutter capitalized on a rebound after a blocked shot to level the score, surviving a VAR check for handball in the process.

The match unfolded in challenging rain-soaked conditions, with Brighton threatening early on through a Maxim De Cuyper cross that nearly caught West Ham’s goalkeeper Alphonse Areola off guard. Diego Gomez also squandered a chance with a header from a corner. The visitors improved as the game progressed, particularly with the returning Lucas Paquetá making his mark, although they failed to capitalize on several opportunities.

West Ham began the game weakly, with Paquetá missing a golden opportunity when he intercepted a pass intended for Brighton’s captain Lewis Dunk, presenting Crysencio Summerville with a chance that went begging. An impressive defensive performance from Dunk himself, marking his 501st appearance, kept Brighton in contention as he thwarted a potential West Ham goal.

Despite West Ham starting brightly in the second half, with Bowen drawing a remarkable save from Verbruggen, it was Rutter’s late strike that ultimately defined the fixture. West Ham remains in the bottom three of the league, reflecting ongoing struggles despite flashes of potential.

As the match wrapped up, both teams were left with mixed emotions; Brighton demonstrated resilience but will be keen to improve, while West Ham must confront the persistent challenge of securing their form. The evolution of both clubs continues amidst the highs and lows of the Premier League.
