Ben White returns to England squad for friendly matches
Ben White has received his first England selection since departing the 2022 Qatar World Cup under controversial circumstances, reports BritPanorama.
The 28-year-old Arsenal defender joins Thomas Tuchel’s squad following Jarell Quansah’s withdrawal due to a thigh injury ahead of the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley.
White’s last appearance for the national team was during a 3-0 victory over the Ivory Coast in March 2022. He left the World Cup camp abruptly after the group stage, with the Football Association attributing his departure to personal reasons.
Gareth Southgate, the previous England manager, consistently dismissed claims of a confrontation between White and the coaching staff. In March 2024, White had declined an invitation to join the squad, asking to be excluded from international selection.
Tuchel, who succeeded Southgate, has previously mentioned constructive conversations with the defender regarding his return to the national team. Alongside White, Harvey Barnes has also been recalled to the England setup for the first time in more than five years.
The Newcastle winger, 28, replaces Eberechi Eze, who will miss the matches due to a calf problem. Barnes, who earned his only England cap during a friendly against Wales in October 2020, turned down an opportunity to represent Scotland, qualifying through his grandparents.
White and Barnes are part of an expanded 35-man England squad assembled by Tuchel. This enlarged group allows several players on the periphery of international selection to showcase their capabilities during the friendlies, providing a unique opportunity for continued assessment of talent.
With Leeds forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Everton’s James Garner also included, the upcoming fixtures present an important chance for Tuchel to evaluate a broader pool of players than typically available during competitive matches.
In an environment where national allegiance often collides with personal choice, the decisions surrounding squad selection serve as a pointed reminder of the complexities inherent in modern football.
