Ben Stokes defends Ben Duckett amid turmoil in Ashes series
England captain Ben Stokes has urged the public to show understanding towards opening batsman Ben Duckett, who will retain his place in the side for the fourth Ashes Test at Melbourne despite a video surfacing that showed him appearing intoxicated during the squad’s controversial break in Noosa, reports BritPanorama.
Stokes, speaking at his Christmas Eve press conference, defended his teammate and expressed a call for empathy from fans. “In this moment right now, a little bit of empathy from everyone would be not too hard to think about,” he stated.
Duckett was filmed during an evening out, plagued by allegations suggesting that the outing took on a less serious tone akin to a “stag-do.” This footage, which shows Duckett slurring his words and being offered a late-night “Uber to the nets,” has triggered renewed scrutiny of alcohol consumption within the England camp during a string of disappointing results on tour.
As the England side struggles in the series, currently trailing 3-0, the focus has shifted to off-field conduct, with ECB managing director Rob Key acknowledging the ongoing investigation into the team’s behaviour. Despite having a poor batting average of just 16 across the defeats in Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide, Duckett remains in the squad, a decision which Stokes backs after personally reaching out to him during this challenging period.
Conversely, Ollie Pope has not been so fortunate; he is dropped after a disappointing average of 20 in the opening three matches, with Jacob Bethell taking his place at number three. England’s woes are compounded with the loss of Jofra Archer, ruled out for the entire series due to a left side strain, prompting the recall of Gus Atkinson.
Stokes understands the pressure of public scrutiny, having faced a similar ordeal himself in 2017 following a widely reported altercation in Bristol. “I know how it can affect people,” he remarked regarding the media’s impact on Duckett. “It’s never a nice place to be in when not only the media world but also the social media world is just piling on top of you.”
While acknowledging the criticism aimed at the squad as justified given their struggles, Stokes conceded, “You don’t really have a leg to stand on when you have lost three games in a huge series like this.”
The upcoming Test at the MCG presents not just an opportunity for redemption on the field, but a moment for the England camp to showcase resilience amidst adversity. In the world of sports, as Duckett faces his challenges, there’s always the potential for redemption, reminding fans and players alike how swiftly fortunes can fluctuate.
