England cricketer Ben Duckett must pay a total of £1,100 after admitting to driving at 93mph in a 70mph zone on the A50 near Stoke last August, reports BritPanorama.

The 31-year-old Test and limited overs opener entered his guilty plea online through the Single Justice Procedure at Cannock Magistrates’ Court on Friday. Staffordshire Police opted for criminal prosecution rather than an out-of-court penalty due to the excessive speed involved.

The court imposed a £700 fine alongside four penalty points on his licence, with an additional £120 in costs and a £280 victim surcharge bringing his total bill to £1,100.

The speeding offence occurred shortly after 1.30pm on 24 August, mere hours before Duckett delivered a standout performance for Birmingham Phoenix against Manchester Originals in The Hundred at Old Trafford. Last week, the batsman withdrew from the Indian Premier League, walking away from a £200,000 deal with Delhi Capitals in an effort to rediscover his form ahead of England’s Test series against New Zealand in June.

This is not Duckett’s first brush with the law on the roads. Back in 2015, when he was an emerging talent, he received a 12-month driving ban after being convicted of drink-driving following a crash into a ditch in Northamptonshire. The left-hander made his England Test debut in 2016 but courted further controversy the following year when he allegedly tipped a drink over teammate James Anderson’s head on a night out.

Since 2022, Duckett has established himself as a crucial opening batsman, thriving under England’s aggressive “Bazball” approach before his recent struggles with form. His recent speeding offence adds another layer to a career that has seen its share of ups and downs.

In a sport where discipline is key, Duckett’s latest setback serves as a reminder that even the brightest talents can lose their way, however briefly, on and off the field.
