The veteran sporting promoter spoke during a Christmas special with Nigel Farage, highlighting how sports like boxing, darts, and snooker instill discipline and purpose, steering youth away from the streets while teaching respect, resilience, and hard work.
“You don’t want them on the street. They’re troubled kids, generally,” Hearn remarked. “They go boxing and they find their way out because you can’t take liberties in a ring.” He added that success in the sport requires more than toughness; it demands skill.
Mr Hearn further illustrated the transformative power of boxing, stating, “No one goes in a ring with a knife. They go in there to defend themselves and to look to change their life through that sport.” He cited numerous stories of individuals whose lives drastically improved through their involvement in boxing, which, he suggested, could have led them down a more troubled path without such intervention.
Reflecting on his own journey, Hearn expressed a wish that his parents could witness the success he has achieved, noting, “They would be gobsmacked at where it’s all gone, and why, and how it’s gone.” He conveyed a commitment to maintain integrity and hard work in his career, aligning with traditional values that he believes are crucial for success.
At 77 years old, Hearn continues to work diligently, attributing his drive to his upbringing and the values instilled by his family. He noted that hard work is central to the culture in Essex, saying, “Essex people are the best customers because they don’t mind working.”
As he looks ahead, Hearn shared his plans for the New Year, which include fishing to relax and reflect on life. He acknowledged the current mess society finds itself in but urged a focus on the positive aspects of life.
