Barcelona bus fire disrupts Champions League match
Barcelona football club has confirmed that a bus transporting fans caught fire before their Champions League clash against Club Brugge in Bruges, Belgium, reports BritPanorama.
Supporters were en route to the Jan Breydel Stadium when the incident occurred. Social media footage showed flares being lit inside the bus, leading to smoke filling the vehicle and necessitating an evacuation. Fortunately, no significant injuries have been reported.
Barcelona issued a statement during the match indicating that there would be no replacement service provided for those affected. The club announced, “The club informs all its fans at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges that the free shuttle bus service back from the stadium, courtesy of Club Brugge, has been suspended due to the incident involving flares before the match. Therefore, they will have to return by their own means.”
In connection with the incident, police have arrested a man, as per reports from Belgian outlet HLN. The flames are believed to have been caused by fireworks, though it remains unclear if this was intentional.
First responders included two firefighters who quickly addressed the smoke and assisted evacuated passengers. The match itself concluded in a dramatic 3-3 draw, with both teams exchanging goals in a contest that highlighted the offensive strengths of each side. Nicolo Tresoldi opened the scoring for Brugge early in the game, setting the tone for an action-packed fixture.
Barcelona responded swiftly through Ferran Torres, only to see Brugge regain the lead through Carlos Forbs shortly thereafter. The second half continued the fast-paced exchange, with Lamine Yamal equalising for the visitors, but Forbs struck again to put Brugge ahead. A late own goal from Christos Tzolis ensured a draw, leaving Barcelona struggling at 12th place in their group with only two wins from four matches.
As Barcelona looks ahead, the team will next face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, followed by fixtures against Eintracht Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, and FC Copenhagen. The ongoing challenges this season are a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of football, where moments of brilliance can be overshadowed by unforeseen incidents off the pitch.
