Aston Villa removes Emiliano Martinez as vice-captain amid Manchester United transfer speculations

Emiliano Martinez stripped of Aston Villa vice-captaincy

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has revealed that goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez no longer holds the position of vice-captain at the club, reports BritPanorama.

The change became apparent during Thursday evening’s European fixture against Maccabi Tel Aviv, when Ezri Konsa donned the captain’s armband in John McGinn’s absence. The 33-year-old Argentine international had previously served as the automatic choice to lead the team whenever McGinn was unavailable.

However, the absence of Martinez from the starting eleven for the match against the Israeli side at Villa Park raised questions regarding his status within the leadership hierarchy, as Konsa emerged as captain.

This decision follows a turbulent summer for Martinez, who had sought a transfer to Manchester United after four years with the Midlands club. Following Villa’s last match of the previous season against the Red Devils, the goalkeeper was visibly emotional, bidding farewell to supporters while in tears.

Despite ongoing negotiations between Villa and United, an agreement was never reached, and Martinez remained at Villa. After Villa’s 2-0 victory against Maccabi, Emery addressed the restructuring of leadership within the squad, confirming Martinez’s removal from vice-captaincy duties but refraining from linking the decision to the goalkeeper’s transfer intentions.

Emery stated, “The first captain is John McGinn. We decided how we are, as well as managing the next captain.” He acknowledged that typically, Martinez would be the second captain, but current circumstances warranted the change in leadership.

Martinez’s family, seeking to clarify the situation, noted his commitment as both a professional and a person. “I was told that Emi gave a lot as a professional and as a person, they love him, and you could see that on the pitch,” said his brother, Alejandro.

In the wake of this leadership shift, it’s a poignant reminder of the complexities that accompany player transitions in an era where loyalty is often tested against the pressures of high-profile moves. In football, every change tells a story — and sometimes, the most compelling narratives are not always those that end with a trophy.
