Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea target Morgan Rogers in £80m transfer race

Morgan Rogers attracts interest from top Premier League clubs

Morgan Rogers finds himself at the heart of a potential £80 million summer transfer battle, with three of English football’s biggest clubs circling the Aston Villa star, reports BritPanorama.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, an England international, has made a significant impact with 24 goals and 23 assists since the start of last season, solidifying his status as one of the most desirable players in the Premier League.

Thomas Tuchel is expected to make Rogers a pivotal part of his World Cup strategy this summer, with the player’s performances in the USA likely influencing any transfer discussions.

Aston Villa secured an extension to Rogers’ contract last summer, which ties him to the club until 2031 without a release clause. According to The Times, the Midlands club’s £80 million asking price incorporates a profit-sharing agreement with Middlesbrough, who sold the midfielder for £15 million in February 2024, requiring Villa to pay 20% of any future sell-on profit to Middlesbrough.

The substantial fee may deter some prospective buyers; however, Villa retains full control over negotiations thanks to the absence of a buyout clause. Despite recent financial improvements, Villa reported losses of £120.3 million during the 2022-23 season, followed by an additional £85.9 million in the next year. Although a £17 million profit last season provided some relief, careful financial management remains essential.

Alongside the financial considerations, selling Rogers could alleviate pressure related to compliance with Profit and Sustainability Regulations. However, this decision will weigh against Villa’s sporting ambitions and the formidable challenge of replacing such a key player.

Rogers’ future could also hinge on Champions League football, with both Villa’s European aspirations and those of interested clubs likely affecting any summer transfer decision. Villa’s hopes remain buoyed after a 3-1 victory over Bologna in the Europa League quarter-final first leg, while qualification for the next season’s Champions League appears within reach.

Arsenal is already assured of a Champions League spot, sitting atop the Premier League table, while Manchester United resides third following a resurgence under manager Michael Carrick. In contrast, Chelsea, under Liam Rosenior, continues to showcase inconsistency, potentially jeopardising their chances of competing at the highest level.

Unai Emery has noted the physical attention Rogers receives from opponents, stating earlier this season, “Morgan is a very important player for us and sometimes they are trying to kick him and stop him, sometimes being close to a yellow card or red card.” The manager emphasized that his review of the handling of his star player is ongoing.

As the summer transfer window approaches, the tug-of-war for Rogers is just beginning, signalling an intriguing summer ahead for clubs and players alike. Amidst the financial constraints and sporting ambitions, the path that Morgan Rogers will take remains to be seen.
