Arne Slot has reacted to Liverpool’s disastrous 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon, reports BritPanorama.

The Reds had entered the showdown hoping to continue their charge towards the trophy but were outclassed by their rivals. City’s performance was highlighted by Erling Haaland, who netted a hat-trick, with Antoine Semenyo also finding the net as Manchester City cruised into the last four.

The defeat added pressure on Slot, who, less than a year after guiding Liverpool to Premier League title glory, now faces questions about his future. The Dutchman expressed his frustration regarding individual errors that cost his team, acknowledging a lack of composure in finishing their chances and defensive failings that proved costly.

“Very disappointing not only to be out but also the manner and the result,” Slot told TNT Sports. “Another big disappointment for us.” When asked what was missing from his side, he remarked: “Things that have been missing for large parts of the season. Converting our chances into goals. That was missing in the first half.”

Slot reflected on the impact of the penalty conceded, stating, “I think it was an equal game up to the moment they scored the penalty. The last time we played here, we conceded just before half-time and today again, that was mentally not easy.” He highlighted that despite seeing a promising first 35 minutes, the quick second-half goals sank Liverpool further into despair.

There was some relief for Slot as he remarked on the outcome. “The only good thing was that we didn’t concede more,” he noted, admitting, “Four-nil down at the Etihad, the way we played in that moment, we’re fighting the worst although it was already worse. But it stayed four.”

Notably, Mohamed Salah’s difficult afternoon stood out as a significant low point for Liverpool; the Egyptian international missed a crucial chance and a penalty during the match. Despite this, Slot refrained from placing the blame solely on Salah’s shoulders, asserting, “I wouldn’t focus on one player, I’d focus on the team.” He indicated that the struggles of the side run deeper this season.

Overall, it is clear that Liverpool’s journey through this FA Cup campaign has met an abrupt end, casting a shadow over the immediate future for both Slot and the team. The echoes of this match serve as a reminder of the thin line between success and failure in football; it’s a harsh lesson in the unforgiving world of sport.
