Arne Slot admits Liverpool's defeat at Brentford highlights tactical weaknesses in recent performances

Liverpool Suffers Defeat to Brentford as Manager Seeks Answers

Liverpool manager Arne Slot described his side’s defeat at Brentford as the poorest performance of his tenure and admitted he is still searching for solutions to counter teams who play a more direct style, reports BritPanorama.

The Premier League champions suffered a 3–2 loss in west London, marking their fourth consecutive league defeat — the toughest stretch since the Dutchman took over at Anfield. This run of poor form has raised concerns about the team’s tactical preparedness.

Brentford, managed by Keith Andrews, achieved a memorable victory through goals from Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade, and Igor Thiago, despite efforts from Milos Kerkez and Mohamed Salah to keep Liverpool in contention.

When asked if it was Liverpool’s worst display under his management, Slot did not hesitate. “Yeah, I think it is up there,” he said. “Normally when we go 1–0 or 2–0 down, that’s when I start to like our reaction — but not tonight. After 30 minutes, Brentford took control again with long throws, set-pieces and moments where they were really strong.”

Slot expressed disappointment with his team’s inability to adapt to Brentford’s physical approach. “They did many things well. It’s disappointing. We expected a better result after our midweek win, but more importantly, I was expecting a better performance,” he remarked.

He reflected on Liverpool’s recent struggles, noting, “Teams have a certain playing style against us, which is proving to be a very good strategy. We haven’t found the answer yet. Going 1–0 down after five minutes doesn’t help. Teams know how to play against us now.”

The defeat further complicates Liverpool’s title defence, as injuries and fatigue have emerged as factors contributing to their declining form. The manager’s frustrations hint at underlying issues with team discipline and tactical awareness when facing aggressive opponents.

For Brentford, the victory was a landmark achievement. Andrews praised his players for their courage and organization, describing their performance as a reflection of the team’s growing belief. “We’ve just beaten the Premier League champions. It ranks pretty highly for me,” he commented.

With Liverpool’s next match against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup looming, the focus will be on their ability to rectify this downturn in performance. It’s a crucial moment for Slot and his squad, as the demands of the season intensify.

As the dust settles on this remarkable upset, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of football; where even giants can stumble, and every match brings its unique challenges and revelations.
