Anthony Joshua’s rehabilitation following tragic car accident
Anthony Joshua is undergoing intensive rehabilitation more than two months after a car accident in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two close companions, reports BritPanorama.
The former heavyweight champion, aged 36, has shared updates on Snapchat showing painful therapeutic treatment for his ribs. The tragic incident on 29 December claimed the lives of his personal trainer Kevin “Latz” Ayodele and his long-standing recovery therapist Sina Ghami.
Ten days prior to the accident, Joshua achieved a sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami. Both Ayodele and Ghami were described by Joshua as his “brothers.” Following the incident, he returned to the UK shortly after to attend their funerals.
This accident has raised significant uncertainties regarding Joshua’s boxing career, leading to the cancellation of a bout originally scheduled for March. Promoter Eddie Hearn has expressed optimism, suggesting Joshua is keen to honour his late friends through a return to the ring.
Hearn is exploring prospects for Joshua to make a comeback in July, but he has emphasised that Joshua’s physical state has yet to allow him to resume full training. Speaking in February, Hearn remarked, “I’m planning, but he’s just resting and preparing.”
An initial strategy had involved Joshua to fight in March before facing his rival Tyson Fury in August. However, Hearn has since clarified that these plans are no longer feasible. The promoter noted that a July return depends on Joshua’s ability to begin training again, which he hopes will occur in the coming weeks.
In the complex world of boxing, injuries and human tragedies often shape the narrative, echoing the saying that sport can sometimes reflect life in its countless twists. Joshua’s path back will be watched closely — not just for his skill in the ring, but for the resilience he must show beyond it.
