Anthony Joshua to face Jake Paul in Miami showdown

Anthony Joshua will make a surprise return to the ring next month in a blockbuster showdown with Jake Paul, with organisers confirming the bout will be staged in Miami on December 19, reports BritPanorama.

The heavyweight clash, set to stream live worldwide on Netflix, features an extraordinary £140 million prize fund, which will be divided evenly between the two fighters. The Kaseya Center will host the contest, marking Joshua’s first appearance since his heavy defeat to Daniel Dubois over a year ago.

For Paul, this event represents the most significant test of his boxing career to date. The 28-year-old American has achieved 12 victories in 13 professional bouts since transitioning from YouTube fame, with his singular loss coming by points against Tommy Fury. Boldly calling the Miami showdown “Judgment Day”, Paul issued a warning to the former two-time unified heavyweight champion.

“This isn’t an AI simulation. This is Judgment Day,” he stated upon the fight’s announcement. He further commented, “A professional heavyweight fight against an elite world champion in his prime. When I beat Anthony Joshua, every doubt disappears, and no one can deny me the opportunity to fight for a world title.”

Originally, Paul was set to fight Gervonta “Tank” Davis in an exhibition at the same venue this November, a match that collapsed following Davis’ arrest. Subsequently, Paul’s team moved quickly to secure Joshua as an alternative opponent for December.

Though there were expectations for Joshua to engage in a preliminary fight, plans changed due to the substantial financial package offered for the bout with Paul. This match has now become one of the most lucrative events of the year. Promoter Eddie Hearn has publicly discussed a broader strategy designed to guide Joshua back towards a high-profile encounter with Tyson Fury, projected for 2026, a fight which has garnered interest from Saudi officials.

Joshua has reportedly agreed to terms on his side for the Fury bout, although Fury’s intentions remain less clear. The upcoming match with Paul will take place as a fully sanctioned professional heavyweight contest under Queensberry rules. Special arrangements have been made to allow Joshua to compete on Netflix, despite his exclusivity agreement with DAZN, which reportedly received significant compensation to facilitate this one-off arrangement.

Both fighters are scheduled to meet face to face at a Miami press conference on Friday, where further promotional details will be revealed. Time will tell how this highly anticipated confrontation unfolds, capturing the intrigue of both sports fans and casual observers alike.
