Anthony Joshua pledges lifelong support to families of friends killed in car accident
Anthony Joshua has committed to providing lifelong support to the families of his two close friends who died in a car accident in Nigeria last week, reports BritPanorama.
The 36-year-old heavyweight boxer publicly addressed the tragedy for the first time yesterday, sharing photographs with the bereaved families on Instagram.
His post was captioned “My Brothers Keeper,” alongside two heart emojis and a military helmet symbol, hinting at his commitment to protect and care for the families. The phrase references a biblical passage from Genesis 4:9, which emphasizes the moral obligation to look after others.
A source from Joshua’s camp informed The Sun that “AJ is fiercely loyal to his friends and their families and will be there for them for the rest of their lives.” The images shared provided a poignant look into his deep connection with the grieving families.
One photograph features Joshua seated next to Sanaz, the sister of Sina Ghami, who holds a picture of her late brother. In that same image, the mothers of both victims were joined by Joshua’s own mother, Yeta Odusanya, further highlighting the communal aspect of grief.
A second image depicts Joshua, who sustained injuries in the collision, sitting on the floor beside Alex Ayodele, the father of Latif. The source reiterated the long-standing camaraderie, stating, “He’s had the same team around him for his whole career and that team included Sina and Latz.”
Ghami served as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele acted as his personal trainer, making both men irreplaceable elements of his boxing camp. Their vehicle collided with a stationary lorry on a notoriously hazardous road near Lagos last Monday, resulting in their instant deaths.
Joshua, who was heard crying out in anguish, required extraction from the wreckage by rescuers. He was rushed to hospital but fortunately escaped with only minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle also survived the collision.
Joshua attended an emotional funeral service at London Central Mosque yesterday, joining other mourners in paying their respects. His Instagram post marked the first public address since the incident, and the images suggest he is recovering well from his injuries.
The remains of Ghami and Ayodele were repatriated to Britain last Friday, flown back via Istanbul aboard a Turkish Airlines cargo flight, allowing their families to make funeral arrangements in London following the devastating accident on a perilous Nigerian road.
This tragic event underlines the pronounced fragility of life and the bonds that persist even in loss, as Joshua’s commitment to his fallen friends’ families serves as a poignant reminder of loyalty amid heartache.
