Anthony Joshua honours friends lost in tragic accident

Anthony Joshua has paid tribute to two close friends who lost their lives in a tragic road accident by tattooing their names on his arm, reports BritPanorama.

Sina Ghami, Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, one of his trainers, died when their vehicle collided with a truck on a road near Lagos in December. Joshua, 36, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, was also in the car and sustained injuries that required hospitalisation before his return to the UK to attend both funerals.

In an emotional Instagram video last month, Joshua publicly addressed the loss for the first time, describing Ghami and Ayodele as “brothers” and “friends,” emphasising their deep personal and professional connection. He remarked on the accident as an “unforeseen circumstance” that no one could control, having just celebrated a victory over Jake Paul in Miami before heading to Nigeria for the holidays.

Joshua expressed his commitment to supporting the families of both men, promising to aid them in achieving their aspirations despite their absence. “My goal is to help their families and to help them achieve their goals, even though they may not be here in the physical,” he stated. Recognising the extensive support he received from fans worldwide, he noted the overwhelming number of messages and prayers directed to him and their families.

He also directly addressed the parents of his deceased friends, affirming his connection and support: “Mumma Latz, Mumma Sina, Pappa Latz, Pappa Sina, one love.” Questions linger about Joshua’s potential return to the boxing ring post-tragedy, with his promoter, Eddie Hearn, highlighting that while Joshua’s injuries from the accident do not pose long-term damage, the recovery process is paramount before any training can resume. Hearn stressed that recent footage of Joshua working out is not indicative of preparation for a comeback, but rather part of his personal recovery journey.

In a sport where strength often masks vulnerability, Joshua’s ordeal is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the bonds that transcend the ring.
