Andy Robertson agrees to join Tottenham on one condition after Liverpool exit

Tottenham set to sign Andy Robertson on free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, reports BritPanorama.

The deal hinges on Spurs avoiding relegation from the Premier League, a challenge made more pressing following their recent drop into the relegation zone after West Ham’s 4-0 victory against Wolves. Newly appointed manager Roberto De Zerbi is a proponent of acquiring the 32-year-old defender.

Robertson was initially poised for a move in January, but Liverpool’s failure to secure a replacement halted the transfer. The Scottish international has had a reduced role this season, with Milos Kerkez now the first-choice left-back at Anfield. Despite playing the majority of his 31 appearances as a substitute, Robertson remains the Premier League’s all-time leading assist provider among defenders, amassing 60 assists throughout his career.

As Liverpool confirmed his departure at the season’s end, the confirmed transfer to Spurs follows a notable campaign for Robertson, who has seen his game time dwindle. His current contract expires this summer, and he expressed his desire for more regular first-team football, a sentiment echoed by Liverpool manager Arne Slot who acknowledged the player’s need for consistent playtime. “Every player wants as much regular first-team football as possible,” Slot said.

Spurs have struggled with injuries at left-back, with both Ben Davies and Destiny Udogie sidelined for significant periods this season. Currently, they sit close to the relegation zone with their last league win coming in 2025, as they prepare for De Zerbi’s first match in charge against Sunderland on Sunday.

As the transfer window approaches, Robertson’s move to Tottenham underscores the broader dynamics of football amidst the rigours of the Premier League, where even established players face the turbulence of teams striving to regain their form.
