Emma Raducanu brings Mark Petchey back into coaching setup
Emma Raducanu has brought Mark Petchey back into her coaching setup on an informal basis as she prepares for the Indian Wells Masters 1000 tournament, reports BritPanorama.
This decision follows closely after the 23-year-old British star indicated that she was not actively seeking a new coach. Speaking to the Guardian recently, Raducanu noted, “Right now I have Alexis in my corner. He knows me as a person. He knows me as a player.”
Petchey, 55, previously guided the former US Open champion from March to July of the previous year. His return comes as Raducanu aims to build on her encouraging run to the Transylvania Open final.
Following her early exit from the Australian Open in January, Raducanu parted ways with Francisco Roig. Since then, Alexis Canter has been assisting the British number one, and he will continue to be part of her team moving forward.
Petchey’s arrival adds significant experience to her coaching arrangement, although his role remains supplementary rather than permanent. Known for his previous work with Sir Andy Murray, Petchey brings a wealth of knowledge from his time in British tennis, where he played a pivotal role in several players’ developments.
The collaboration with Raducanu provides a unique opportunity for both as they navigate the demands of the professional circuit, and Petchey is familiar with the complexities of managing a young athlete’s expectations and performance under pressure.
For Raducanu, the support from a veteran coach like Petchey may prove beneficial as she looks to strengthen her game and achieve consistency on the WTA tour. As she continues to evolve as a player, the dynamics of her coaching team will undoubtedly play a crucial role in her journey ahead.
In a sport where relationships can shape careers, Raducanu’s latest decision reflects a broader trend of players revisiting past collaborations — a reminder that in tennis, as in life, sometimes the familiar can spark new success.
