Alexander Zverev reaches 10th Grand Slam semi-final at Australian Open
Alexander Zverev advanced to his 10th Grand Slam semi-final by defeating American rising star Learner Tien 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, reports BritPanorama.
This victory marks Zverev’s fourth appearance in a Melbourne semi-final, setting a new record for German men at the tournament.
The match unfolded under intense conditions, with officials closing the roof after the tournament’s heat-stress scale reached its threshold of five just before play commenced. Consequently, the match was held indoors, providing air conditioning for both spectators and players.
Zverev praised Tien’s baseline game, acknowledging the young American’s exceptional skill. “Learner from the baseline was playing unbelievable,” he noted. He further remarked, “I don’t think I’ve played anyone who plays that well from the baseline for a very long time. I don’t know what Michael Chang has done with him in the off-season, but it’s incredible. Without my 20 something aces, I probably would not have won today.”
Tien, aiming to become the youngest Melbourne semi-finalist in 34 years, showcased considerable talent despite his opponent’s power. His notable performance included remarkable court craft, particularly with a series of well-executed drop shots and net skills that challenged Zverev’s game.
Despite being down 5-3 in the second set tie-break, Tien rallied to claim the set, demonstrating his potential. However, as the match progressed, his relative inexperience became evident, particularly in the third set, where he struggled to sustain his early momentum.
In the fourth set, Zverev managed to save a set point at 5-6 with a powerful serve, ultimately taking control of the tie-break and securing his place in the semi-finals. The 28-year-old now stands just one victory away from reaching his third Grand Slam final. He is scheduled to play in the semi-final match on January 30, with hopes of adding to his tally of 24 career singles titles.
As Zverev prepares for the next challenge in his quest for Grand Slam success, the match serves as a reminder of the emerging talents shaping the future of tennis, a blend of skill and promise that continues to thrill fans and critics alike.
