Chelsea star Alejandro Garnacho convicted of speeding near Manchester United’s training ground

Chelsea star Alejandro Garnacho has been convicted of speeding away from Manchester United’s training ground just days before his bitter exit from the club last summer, reports BritPanorama.

The Argentine winger triggered a speed camera while driving his Audi RS3 close to the club’s Carrington facility on August 26, 2024, just four days prior to signing for Chelsea in a £40 million deal amidst a fraught United departure.

Garnacho was recorded driving at 50 mph in a 40 mph zone. At Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to the speeding charge and expressed regret through his legal representatives, stating he was “embarrassed” by the incident.

His legal team’s statement noted, “Mr Garnacho accepts that he committed the offence of exceeding the speed limit and has pleaded guilty to the offence.” They added, “Mr Garnacho explains this was an oversight on his part and apologises for the offence.”

The 21-year-old also faced a charge for failing to respond to a Greater Manchester Police letter regarding the speeding offence; however, this charge was dropped once he entered a guilty plea. Eventually, he was fined £660, ordered to pay £120 in costs, and received a £264 victim surcharge, while also accumulating three penalty points on his driving licence.

The sentencing took place at a closed hearing under the Single Justice Procedure. Garnacho joined Manchester United’s academy from Atletico Madrid in 2020 in a transfer valued at approximately £420,000 and debuted for the first team under then-manager Erik ten Hag in October 2022 against Moldovan champions Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League.

This incident, combined with his departure from Old Trafford following a rift with manager Ruben Amorim, marks a notable chapter in Garnacho’s career. His struggle to adhere to team protocols led to tensions that ultimately resulted in his exit from the club at the end of the 2024/25 season.

As the transfer window shifts the landscape for many players, Garnacho’s journey highlights the complexities young talents face in managing both their on-field responsibilities and personal conduct — proving that in the world of football, speed can take on various meanings.
