Alejandro Davidovich Fokina faces crowd tension in Australian Open second-round victory

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina encountered a near-altercation with spectators during his challenging second-round match at the Australian Open, where the Spanish 14th seed emerged victorious against Reilly Opelka with a score of 6-3, 7-6(3), 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, reports BritPanorama.

Tensions escalated early in the fourth set when Davidovich Fokina approached a specific section of the stands, gesturing at individuals in response to the crowd’s reaction. The chair umpire intervened to restore order amid the disturbance.

Despite the incident, the Spaniard secured victory in the crucial fifth set. The tension arose when crowd members applauded after Davidovich Fokina twisted his ankle and lost a point. “I twisted my ankle and he won the point. And I think it’s not fair for me they cheered that point because maybe I could get twisted worst,” he explained after the match.

Fortunately, Davidovich Fokina confirmed that the injury was not serious and did not affect his subsequent performance, stating, “But no, it was a low twist. I didn’t have anything. I didn’t have any pain.” He also expressed his displeasure at the crowd’s reaction, noting, “It was not fair that they were cheering at that point because it was a free point for him.”

The player dismissed the crowd’s unsportsmanlike behaviour, referring to them as “four ignorant drunks that I can do nothing about.” This match marked only his second appearance in the third round at Melbourne Park, having previously reached this stage in 2025, while his best showing in a Grand Slam remains his quarter-final run at the 2021 French Open.

In this next round, Davidovich Fokina will face 19th seed Tommy Paul, who has advanced through his matches in straight sets. Their head-to-head record suggests a challenging matchup for the Spaniard, who has yet to win against Paul in four previous encounters, three of which occurred at Grand Slam tournaments. Overcoming his poor record against Paul would be a notable achievement, particularly considering the American’s current form.

As the competition heats up at Melbourne Park, Davidovich Fokina’s journey illustrates the pressures athletes face, not just from their opponents but also from the unpredictable dynamics of the crowd.
