Ahmed Elmohamady defends Mohamed Salah against Jamie Carragher’s criticism

Ahmed Elmohamady has launched a scathing attack on Jamie Carragher after the former Liverpool defender branded Mo Salah “a disgrace” in the wake of the Egyptian star’s explosive interview criticising his club, reports BritPanorama.

The retired Aston Villa full-back took to X to defend his former international teammate following Carragher’s disparaging remarks during Monday Night Football. Salah’s interview had drawn significant attention as he accused Liverpool of “throwing me under the bus” after their recent 3-3 draw with Leeds.

The 33-year-old forward had faced a challenging time at Liverpool, having been benched for three consecutive matches by manager Arne Slot amidst a difficult campaign for the club. In his remarks, Salah suggested that “someone doesn’t want me at the club,” aggravating the tensions within the team.

Carragher did not hold back in his assessment, asserting the interview was more than just an emotional reaction. He remarked, “I thought it was a disgrace what he did after the game” and indicated that Salah’s comments were part of a carefully orchestrated effort to bolster his own position. He claimed, “Whenever Mo Salah stops in the mixed zone… it’s choreographed between him and his agent to cause maximum damage.”

Continuing his criticism, Carragher alleged that Salah had thrown Liverpool under the bus “twice in the last 12 months” and referenced the player’s previous struggles at Chelsea. His comments ignited a wave of backlash on social media, notably from Elmohamady.

Elmohamady’s response was blistering in its defence of Salah’s achievements. He asserted, “Right Jamie you’re a disgrace, Salah completely rewrote his story through hard work, humility, and world-class performances.” He dismissed Carragher’s criticism regarding Salah’s time at Chelsea, stating that the forward was never given a fair chance and had since rebuilt himself to become a Premier League legend.

Pointing to Salah’s contributions on the international stage, Elmohamady mentioned that he had carried Egypt to World Cup qualification twice. The exchange intensified when he referenced former incidents involving Carragher, including remarks from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, illustrating a history of being on the receiving end of criticism.

On the broadcast, presenter David Jones also took the opportunity to critique Carragher’s stance, reminding him of previous comments questioning Salah’s fitness. Viewers noted this interaction as a memorable television moment.

In light of Salah’s comments and the ensuing controversy, the immediate consequence was his exclusion from Liverpool’s squad for their forthcoming Champions League fixture against Inter Milan. Manager Arne Slot expressed surprise at Salah’s declaration that they have “no relationship,” stating the player has the right to voice his feelings but questioning the timing and medium of his remarks.

The situation highlights the delicate balance within professional football between individual expression and team dynamics, especially amid high-profile scrutiny. As conflicts arise in the high-pressure environment of top-tier football, they remind us of the often complex interplay between a player’s personal narrative and their professional obligations.
