Aaron Ramsey announces retirement from professional football

Aaron Ramsey has confirmed his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, drawing the curtain on a two-decade playing career, reports BritPanorama.

The former Arsenal and Wales midfielder announced his decision on Instagram on Tuesday morning, describing it as a difficult choice. “This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football,” he wrote.

Ramsey has been a free agent since parting ways with Mexican club Pumas by mutual consent last October, where he made just six appearances. Over his career, he accumulated more than 600 appearances across club and international football.

His trophy cabinet boasts three FA Cup winners’ medals, all secured during his 11-year tenure at Arsenal, where he featured in 369 matches and scored 64 goals. The midfielder started his journey at boyhood club Cardiff City before moving to north London under legendary manager Arsène Wenger.

Ramsey’s international career saw him represent Wales 86 times, scoring 21 goals. In his farewell message, he expressed profound gratitude to the Welsh national team, stating it had been a privilege to wear the Welsh shirt. He paid tribute to the Red Wall, Wales’ dedicated supporters, saying, “You have been there through thick and thin!”

He thanked all the clubs he had been fortunate to play for, along with the managers and staff who helped him achieve his dreams. His time at club and country was not without its challenges; Ramsey faced persistent injuries that often limited his appearances and contributions.

Despite these setbacks, he won six major honours throughout his playing career. His last international cap came in 2024, while Wales’ recent loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a World Cup qualifying play-off ended any hopes of bidding farewell on the grand international stage.

Looking ahead, Ramsey plans to remain active as he prepares to participate in this year’s TCS London Marathon on April 26. His time in Mexico also brought personal challenges, notably the disappearance of the family’s dog.

In stepping away from the sport, Ramsey leaves behind a legacy marked by resilience and dedication, providing further proof that even the most storied careers can be punctuated by unforeseen twists and turns.
