95-year-old swimmer Jane Asher sets five new world records

A 95-year-old swimmer from Morden in south London has added five more age group world records to her remarkable collection, reports BritPanorama.

Jane Asher, who recently celebrated her 95th birthday, now holds well over 100 Masters swimming records. Her latest achievements further establish her as one of the most decorated athletes in the Masters category, which encompasses competitors aged 25 and above.

Her recent records were secured at the 33rd Guernsey International Masters Open, an event she has attended almost annually since 1992. This latest success coincides with her transition into the 95-99 age bracket, marking a significant milestone in her long career. Ms Asher’s affinity with the island dates back to her honeymoon in 1955, showcasing her longstanding connection to the event.

The competition also served as an unexpected celebration, with family members arriving in Guernsey to commemorate her 95th birthday. “I was so pleased to see them – it was brilliant,” she remarked, adding, “I just love the island.”

Ms Asher entered multiple events at what will be the final edition of this competition, as organizers cited rising costs as the reason for its conclusion. Despite the situation, she attributed her longevity in the sport to the well-being it provides and the supportive community surrounding her. “After you’ve had a swim, you get out, and you just feel, ‘oh, I can go anywhere,” she told Guernsey Press.

In reflecting on her success, she expressed gratitude for her supportive network: “I feel grateful. I’m so lucky. I’ve had the right parents, I’ve had the opportunities. I’ve got friends who help. That’s absolutely crucial. It’s friends that make the whole thing. That’s what life’s about, isn’t it?” With sights set on Budapest for her next competition and the potential for further records, Ms Asher shows no signs of slowing down.

Asher’s story is a testament not only to personal achievement but also to the vibrant and often unexpected connections formed through sport, reminding us that age is no barrier to ambition and passion in the competitive waters of swimming.
