UK weighs warship deployment to Cyprus after Iranian drone attack on RAF base

Plans to deploy warship to Cyprus following drone attack

Britain is drawing up plans to scramble a warship to defend its Cyprus military base following a drone attack from Iran, reports BritPanorama.

Government sources have confirmed that ministers are “considering” deploying a Navy gunboat to RAF Akrotiri. The base was targeted by an Iranian drone on Sunday, coming within 800 yards of UK personnel stationed on the island.

Defence Secretary John Healey has been in talks with officials over the past 24 hours regarding the potential deployment of a warship, likely the Type 45 Destroyer HMS Duncan. The attack has prompted criticism of the government’s response, with key political figures expressing concern over the delay in action.

Tory MP Andrew Bowie criticized the government’s hesitance, stating, “Considering?! It’s day four of this thing and Ministers are considering. France rerouted a carrier and support ships to the region three days ago.” French President Emmanuel Macron took decisive steps by ordering two warships to support Britain’s RAF Akrotiri, following a plea for assistance from Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides.

Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership has also come under scrutiny, with criticisms surrounding his handling of recent events. His refusal to back the initial U.S. strike that killed Ayatollah Khamenei has raised concerns about the future of the UK’s special relationship with the United States.

Cabinet Minister Darren Jones emphasized that “We don’t want to get involved in a wider war in the Middle East,” while Tory leader Kemi Badenoch insisted that urgent action is necessary, stating, “Our bases are under attack. British citizens are in danger across the Middle East.”

France’s intervention followed similar military support offered by Greece after two drone incidents targeted Britain’s sovereign base on the island, further escalating regional tensions.

The Iranian-made Shahed drone that struck the runway during the first attack caused limited damage, with additional interceptions occurring shortly thereafter. Senior Cypriot officials confirmed that the drone was likely launched by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah from Lebanon, with the British base as the intended target.

This escalation follows Britain’s agreement to support a U.S. request to use its bases for “defensive” strikes against Iran, amidst a campaign initiated by Washington and Israel that provoked Iranian retaliation.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has since stated that Britain’s Cyprus bases are not being used by U.S. bombers, with Cyprus urging the UK to limit the bases’ usage to humanitarian operations only. In a show of regional solidarity, Athens has dispatched four F-16 fighter jets and two frigates to the island, highlighting a unified response to the threat.

One of the proposed warships is equipped with the Centauros anti-drone jamming system, a technology previously deployed against Houthi rebels targeting shipping lanes off Yemen. Defence sources indicate that this system could detect and disable low-flying drones, exposing vulnerabilities at the critical British military outpost in Cyprus.

The situation remains fluid, and the decisions made in the coming days will have significant implications for the UK’s defence posture in the region and its relationships with international partners.

The unfolding events underscore a challenging moment for the UK, as it balances defensive imperatives with the complexities of international diplomacy. As tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, the government’s response will be scrutinized for both its immediacy and long-term strategic considerations.
