Fake news platform with Moscow connections exposed
A German-language website presenting itself as independent media has been identified as part of a proxy network working for Russian intelligence services. The site, Anonymous News, is managed by an individual with a criminal past involving illegal weapons trafficking, who now operates a company registered in Moscow and maintains connections with Russian security agencies. This platform regularly disseminates pro-Kremlin messaging regarding the war in Ukraine, criticises Western liberal policies, and supports right-wing radical parties in Germany, according to technical analyses linking its domain to Russian hosting infrastructure used in previous similar projects.
Coordinated influence operation uncovered
French digital interference defence service VIGINUM has identified a network known as Storm-1516, which coordinates dozens of information operations targeting Western audiences. This network, reportedly linked to Unit 29155 of Russian military intelligence, specialises in placing fabricated claims on fake websites masquerading as legitimate news outlets before amplifying false narratives through anonymous accounts on social media platform X. The operation has significantly increased its output, with 34 false stories targeting France and Germany launched since January 2025 alone, accumulating hundreds of millions of views.
Evolving tactics in information warfare
Parallel to Storm-1516, another influence operation called Doppelgänger clones established Western media outlets including Die Welt, Le Point, and The Washington Post to distribute manipulated content. This network uses artificial intelligence to rewrite genuine news, generate fabricated documents, and produce misleading photographs and videos. Meanwhile, the Matryoshka operation disseminates pro-Russian videos while imitating authoritative Western broadcasters. These complementary strategies represent an evolved approach from previously blocked state media outlets to more sophisticated proxy networks capable of industrial-scale content production.
Targets and objectives of the campaign
The disinformation campaigns systematically exploit highly sensitive social issues, particularly fabricated claims about child sexual abuse legislation, to generate maximum public resonance and erode trust in traditional media and governmental institutions. Analysis indicates the primary objectives include dividing European societies, amplifying radical political sentiments, reducing support for Ukraine, and influencing electoral processes and political decisions across member states. The operations form part of a broader strategy of Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference deliberately targeting European democracies.
European responses and countermeasures
European authorities have imposed sanctions against individuals central to these operations, including one American coordinator based in Moscow who manages over one hundred fake websites. Disinformation experts warn that these networks, though sometimes having smaller direct reach than earlier Russian propaganda channels, form part of a significantly broader ecosystem designed to distort Europe’s information landscape through false claims and manipulative materials. They emphasise that media literacy, source verification, and critical assessment of sensational news remain essential defences against this systematic assault on trust in independent journalism and democratic governance.
