Starmer raises King's US visit in bid to reduce tensions with Trump after Iran dispute

Keir Starmer seeks to ease tensions with Donald Trump amid state visit talks

Sir Keir Starmer raised the King’s upcoming state visit to the US in a bid to cool tensions with Donald Trump, reports BritPanorama.

The leaders’ recent phone call was described as “not a rosy affair” following a public disagreement over Iran. An official familiar with the exchange revealed it was a testy conversation, as the President expressed dissatisfaction over Starmer’s initial refusal to allow American pilots to use British air bases for strike missions against Tehran.

Attempts by Starmer to clarify his controversial decision did not sway Trump. The Prime Minister subsequently tried to charm the President by mentioning King Charles’ scheduled trip to Washington DC later this year.

The King and Queen are set to travel to the US at the end of April for a three-day visit coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, which diplomats view as an opportunity to reinforce historic ties between the countries.

This marks the second occasion where the Prime Minister has engaged the monarchy to mend relations, previously delivering a personal letter from the King to Trump at the White House last year.

Nevertheless, some Labour and Lib Dem MPs have called for the trip’s cancellation in protest against Trump’s recent comments about Britain. When asked about the visit’s status, Starmer’s spokesman indicated that “no state visit has been confirmed yet,” and did not wish to elaborate further.

A readout of the recent call indicated discussions on cooperation in the Middle East and a mutual agreement to maintain communication. The Prime Minister had previously denied permission for US planes to conduct strikes from RAF bases, including Fairford and Diego Garcia, but later permitted “specific and limited defensive purposes” missions after considerable pressure from Washington.

This delay led to considerable frustration in the US, marked by multiple public reprimands from Trump, who expressed being “very disappointed” in Starmer and tactlessly noted that he was “not Winston Churchill.” The President also downplayed Britain’s offer of military support, suggesting allies should not join conflicts post-victory.

The developments reflect the complex dynamics at play in US-UK relations amid escalating global tensions and differing approaches to regional security.

The exigencies of diplomacy often require the engagement of history, portrayed here through royal visits, but as concerns over attitudes towards international allies grow, the effectiveness of such tactics remains uncertain.
