Starmer declines to support Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize bid despite ceasefire contributions

SIR Keir Starmer today declined to endorse a Nobel Peace Prize for Donald Trump. The Prime Minister acknowledged that a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas “would not have happened without” the US President, reports BritPanorama.

When questioned about Trump’s suitability for the global award in recognition of his diplomatic achievement, Starmer shifted focus to the necessity of advancing the agreement. Speaking from Mumbai on the last day of his trip to India, he emphasized the need to “press on and implement this.”

Starmer stated, “All parties need to implement, agree and take forward the commitments they’ve made to the next stage. That is hugely important.” He underscored that it was vital to transition from the current welcome stage to ensuring successful implementation of the agreement.

The Israeli Hostages’ Families Forum has formally urged the Nobel Committee to consider Trump’s efforts, sending a letter to support their case. Meanwhile, in Washington, Trump expressed his willingness to accept the honour, claiming, “We’ve settled seven wars and we’re close to settling an eighth,” but added, “Perhaps they’ll find a reason not to give it to me.”

In Mumbai, Starmer reflected on the situation, noting that he was particularly mindful of the hostages held for an extended period and their families. He stated that the ceasefire agreement should also offer hope to civilians in Gaza affected by the ongoing conflict.

While addressing inquiries about whether former Labour leader Sir Tony Blair should play a significant role in the governance of post-war Gaza, Starmer expressed disinterest in personnel discussions. “I’m less interested, to be perfectly frank, in discussions about personnel than I am getting it implemented,” he remarked.

Under Trump’s proposed 20-point plan, Blair would reportedly be part of an international transition body responsible for overseeing Gaza’s political and operational future.
