Shabana Mahmood introduces new immigration reforms

Shabana Mahmood has launched the first of her new immigration reforms — cutting temporary refugee protection from five years to 30 months, reports BritPanorama.

The Home Secretary indicated that adults and accompanied children will be required to return to their home country once it is deemed safe. This shift aims to address what Mahmood described as a “pull factor” for dangerous crossings.

“The reset in Britain’s asylum offer, inspired by Denmark’s success, will encourage those wishing to build a life in the UK to do so via legal routes and reduce the pull factors driving illegal migration,” she commented. The changes will primarily affect adults and accompanied minors claiming asylum and do not necessitate a parliamentary vote, as they amend existing regulations.

Mahmood’s initial phase of the crackdown is set to be formalised shortly, with a detailed presentation to MPs scheduled. Significant reforms, including extending the wait for permanent residency to 10 years for most migrants and up to 20 years for refugees, will require new legislation later in the year.

This overhaul is modelled on Denmark’s rigorous temporary-status system, which Mahmood investigated during a recent fact-finding mission. However, the measures have sparked backlash within the Labour Party, particularly from its left wing. Critics argue Mahmood’s hardline approach contributed to the loss of the party’s previously secure Gorton and Denton seat to the Greens.

As reported, around 80 Labour MPs are contemplating dissent, with influential figures within the party issuing thinly veiled admonitions. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also expressed concern in a recent column, describing the party’s shift to tougher immigration policies as “inauthentic” and a “betrayal.”

Meanwhile, the number of migrants arriving continues to escalate, with 605 crossing the Channel on Wednesday alone. To date, more than 2,200 have made the journey in total, intensifying pressure on Mahmood to demonstrate the effectiveness of her proposed reforms.

This reform initiative reflects a broader trend in UK immigration policy, which seeks to balance national security concerns with humanitarian obligations. The outcome of these changes remains to be seen, particularly in the context of ongoing political challenges within the ruling party.
