Intruder breaches security at Houses of Parliament
An intruder infiltrated the Houses of Parliament, gaining access through a rooftop before being apprehended by a workman. The incident raised concerns over the efficacy of existing security measures, reports BritPanorama.
According to reports, the man managed to evade armed police and a high metal fence to reach the Cholmondeley Room in the House of Lords. He was caught when a maintenance worker noticed him and alerted security personnel.
This break-in occurred during a Sunday lunchtime last month and went unreported at the time, leading to speculation about a potential cover-up within Parliamentary ranks. Following the incident, a spokesman for the House of Lords confirmed that the security arrangements were reviewed and that enhanced measures have been implemented.
Notably, the breach comes months after £10 million had been allocated for a new boundary fence, alongside the installation of a door that reportedly does not function properly. Sources indicate that the incident is considered an embarrassment, with one remarking, “No wonder it has been kept secret.”
The police apprehended a 23-year-old man from Tilehurst, Berkshire, on a trespass charge, and he is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
This situation not only highlights vulnerabilities within the UK’s security apparatus but also underscores the necessity for ongoing evaluations of safety protocols within key governmental institutions.
