Scottish Greens propose raising school starting age
The Scottish Greens have announced a commitment to raise the school starting age to seven as part of their election manifesto, aiming to implement a kindergarten model inspired by the Finnish education system, reports BritPanorama.
This proposal suggests that children in Scotland, who currently begin school between the ages of four and five, would engage in a play-based kindergarten stage for three to six-year-olds. The approach seeks to shift away from formal learning during early childhood.
According to the Greens, under this Finnish-style education model, learning would centre on “creative play” rather than traditional classroom settings. Scottish Greens co-leader Gillian Mackay highlighted that young children are often ill-suited to early formal education, stating, “Learning doesn’t just happen behind a desk. In fact, that’s the worst place for young children to be.”
Mackay further asserted that “play-based learning” offers significant benefits, fostering healthier and happier children who form more positive attitudes towards learning. She emphasized that Scotland is an outlier among education systems in how early children start school, noting that the evidence strongly supports the advantage of a less formal approach for younger children.
She remarked, “The best performing education systems in Europe take a different approach to Scotland. They allow young children to explore the world around them with a focus on social skills, learning outdoors, play, and emotional development.” The party argues that such changes would consequently lead to better long-term educational outcomes.
Additionally, the Scottish Greens’ manifesto includes other reforms, such as eliminating homework in primary schools and overhauling the country’s exam system. The upcoming Scottish elections are set for May 6, 2025, presenting an opportunity for voters to weigh these proposals against the current educational framework.
