A Russian citizen has been apprehended in Bulgaria on suspicion of attempting to bribe voters with cash payments ahead of the country’s snap parliamentary elections, highlighting concerns over foreign interference in the electoral process.

Authorities in the city of Stara Zagora detained the woman after she was allegedly offering €30 per vote in favour of a specific political party. During a search of her residence, police discovered and seized lists of polling stations within the municipality. Each station entry contained projected vote counts for particular political forces. Officers also confiscated cash in various euro denominations believed to be intended for illegal voter inducement operations.
High-stakes political landscape
The incident occurs ahead of Bulgaria’s early parliamentary elections scheduled for 19 April 2026. The contest features pro-European political forces against euro-sceptic parties oriented towards Moscow. Recent opinion polling indicates a narrow gap between major political blocs, making the outcome difficult to predict. Russia is understood to be attempting to influence the pre-election process by supporting aligned political groups and through direct financial intervention at local level.
Kremlin-backed political objectives
Moscow’s electoral strategy in Bulgaria reportedly centres on several political entities. These include the radical nationalist Vazrazhdane (Revival) party, former president Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria, and the BSP-United Left coalition.
