Reeves faces criticism over unclear tax strategy as former BoE governor demands clarity

Concerns Mount Over Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Budget Strategy

A leading economist has expressed serious doubts about Chancellor Rachel Reeves‘ ability to devise a coherent strategy for the upcoming Budget, warning against temporary tax hikes as a solution to the UK’s financial woes, reports BritPanorama.

Former Bank of England governor Lord Mervyn King has called for Reeves to urgently address mounting debt and provide a clear plan to stabilise public finances. He noted that the anticipated Budget next month may lead to tax increases aimed at bridging a significant gap in government revenue.

Currently, Reeves is weighing whether to adhere to Labour’s promise of not raising income tax or pursue alternative smaller levies. This could potentially include a proposed annual mansion tax of £10,000 on properties valued over £3 million. The pressure to find viable solutions intensifies as the government faces difficulties in balancing its budget.

When questioned about Reeves’ approach to the Budget, Lord King expressed his concerns, stating, “No, I can’t and that’s what worries me.” He emphasized that the Chancellor should focus on creating a sustainable tax strategy rather than resorting to arbitrary measures dictated by quantities from the Office for Budget Responsibility.

Lord King argued that a serious strategy is essential, criticising the current approach, which appears improvised. “The OBR produces, just before the Budget, a number and then they look round for what idea is almost written on the back of a fag packet about how you can raise an extra few billion here or few billion there,” he remarked, pointing to a lack of foresight in the government’s planning.

Highlighting the importance of transparency in the government’s financial position, Lord King urged Reeves to confront the stark realities of the UK’s fiscal situation. He remarked, “The most immediate way to ensure the country’s saving as a whole goes up is to reduce the government’s Budget deficit, and that is the big challenge.”

In light of the prevailing uncertainties, Health Secretary Wes Streeting refrained from speculating on the Budget, yet acknowledged the challenging state of public finances, family budgets, and the wider economy. He concluded, “We recognise that we’ve got to get our economy growing again.”

The calls for a comprehensive and carefully thought-out approach to financial strategy underline a growing concern among experts regarding the UK’s economic stability.

The political landscape appears increasingly complex as stakeholders anticipate the forthcoming Budget and its implications for the nation’s financial future.

As the debate over tax and public spending intensifies, lawmakers face the pressing challenge of restoring public confidence in the government’s economic management.
