Nigel Farage faces police referral over alleged campaign finance violations

Nigel Farage referred to police over general election campaign finances

Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform Party, has been referred to police following allegations concerning his campaign finances during the 2024 general election, reports BritPanorama.

These accusations stem from claims by a former staff member, Richard Everett, who alleges that Farage concealed thousands of pounds in expenses associated with his campaign. Everett has reported to the police that certain expenditures, including the hire of two vans equipped with Reform advertising boards and an armoured vehicle used during a rally at Clacton Pier shortly before the election, were not declared.

Additionally, Everett contends there were unreported costs related to media campaigns, banners, signs, t-shirts, and a Reform-themed bar in the campaign office. The former staffer claims to have provided documentation to the Metropolitan Police that substantiates his allegations.

Farage has firmly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that Everett was dismissed from the Reform Party for improper conduct. He stated, “The allegations are completely untrue.” In the wake of these allegations, he faces significant scrutiny regarding compliance with electoral law.

According to electoral regulations, candidates are mandated to declare their expenses and retain receipts for amounts exceeding £20. Non-compliance can lead to criminal charges. In response to the situation, Labour Chair Anna Turley has called for Farage to address serious questions regarding potential law violations and misleading the public during his parliamentary campaign.

Turley emphasized the importance of transparency in parliamentary democracy, asserting that all candidates should adhere to established rules to maintain public trust. “Nigel Farage must come clean and put all the evidence on the table to prove he hasn’t undermined our democracy by breaking the rules. Failure to do so will raise even more questions about what he has to hide,” she said.

Tory Chair Kevin Hollinrake echoed the call for accountability, underscoring that all political participants must abide by the rules to ensure fair elections. He supported the need for a comprehensive investigation by both the Electoral Commission and the police to verify whether Farage and the Reform Party complied with legal standards.

The unfolding situation raises critical questions about electoral integrity and the responsibilities of political leaders to uphold democratic norms.
