Minister refutes claims of cover-up regarding Peter Mandelson's ambassador appointment

Minister denies cover-up over Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador

A minister has denied suggestions of a cover-up regarding the release of files on Peter Mandelson’s appointment as the US ambassador. The controversy arises amid revelations that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer did not personally interview Mandelson for the position, despite being warned about his connections to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, reports BritPanorama.

Energy minister Michael Shanks stated that the Government is fully complying with MPs’ demands and will publish further documents related to Mandelson’s appointment. He asserted, “There’s been no cover-up at all. Downing Street is releasing the documents.”

Downing Street clarified that there was “no requirement” for Sir Keir to formally interview Mandelson prior to his appointment. However, the situation has drawn criticism from opposition figures. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch remarked, “The fact Keir Starmer did not even meet with Peter Mandelson before appointing him as Britain’s ambassador to Washington is a total dereliction of duty.”

Badenoch emphasized the significance of a dossier that outlined Mandelson’s links to Epstein, questioning Starmer’s decision-making process. She stated, “Starmer likes to tell everyone how much of a hot-shot lawyer he was, yet he was handed a dossier clearly showing Mandelson’s close links to Epstein and didn’t even bother to interrogate the man he was about to appoint to high office.”

The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson reiterated that Sir Keir and his team address advice in various ways. They remarked, “The absence of comments in a particular box doesn’t mean the advice wasn’t read or considered. There’s a range of different ways in which the Prime Minister and his senior team responds to advice throughout the day.”

The scrutiny over Mandelson’s appointment highlights ongoing tensions regarding transparency and accountability within the Government’s decision-making processes, particularly in light of the allegations surrounding his ties to Epstein.

The unfolding discourse surrounding Mandelson’s appointment serves as a reflection of the complexities involved in political appointments and the necessity for thorough vetting in sensitive roles.
