Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in central Prague to protest against the political direction of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s government, organisers said.

Protest details and scale

The demonstration began assembling in the Letná district of the Czech capital from 3pm local time on Sunday. Organisers from the Million Moments for Democracy association anticipate between 200,000 and 400,000 participants. Emergency services, including police, firefighters and rescue personnel, are on standby near the protest site.

Core grievances and rallying cry

The event, titled “We Will Not Allow Our Future to Be Stolen,” aims to highlight concerns over what protesters describe as the erosion of democratic standards and the growing oligarchisation of society. Organisers assert these trends are being accelerated by the current administration led by Mr Babiš, a billionaire businessman turned politician.

Historical precedent of public dissent

The same civic group orchestrated a similarly large-scale protest in the summer of 2019, which drew an estimated 250,000 people according to its organisers. That earlier rally also targeted Mr Babiš’s government, indicating a sustained pattern of mass public opposition to his political project.

Broader political tensions in Czechia

Sunday’s gathering follows a series of significant demonstrations last month across several Czech cities. Those protests expressed support for President Petr Pavel in his ongoing institutional conflict with the prime minister’s cabinet. The political climate has been further strained by a recent scandal involving the coalition party ANO’s push to appoint the controversial figure Filip Turek to a government post.
