Lord Mandelson criticises Keir Starmer’s leadership

Lord Mandelson has expressed grave concerns regarding Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership, stating that he has lost the trust of the British public, potentially irreparably so, reports BritPanorama.

The former Ambassador to the United States took aim at both the Prime Minister and Chancellor Rachel Reeves for their management of the economy, declaring that economic performance has become a crucial “litmus test” for any government. He cautioned that the current indicators suggest significant challenges lie ahead in regaining economic recovery and public trust.

This week, Starmer’s approval rating tumbled to its lowest point, with Labour party polling stagnating in third place. The revelations from Mandelson come as further distress for the Prime Minister, especially with speculation surrounding a potential leadership challenge after Labour MP Andrew Gwynne’s resignation triggered a by-election opportunity.

In his piece for the Spectator, Mandelson stated, “Economic performance is becoming the litmus test of Starmer’s Government and, on current indicators, economic recovery and public trust are looking hard to win back.”

Gwynne had been serving as an independent MP due to his dismissal over inappropriate behaviour, highlighting the turmoil within Labour ranks. Signs of unrest are further exacerbated by as speculation arises that Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham may be poised to challenge Starmer if the party continues to falter in public support.

Such developments are notable, as they may influence Labour’s strategy moving forward, especially with a by-election potentially coinciding with local elections on May 7. Burnham has maintained strong ties to Westminster, leading to ongoing conjecture regarding a leadership bid should Labour’s fortunes not improve.

Calls for Burnham to be allowed to stand as a candidate have emerged, with his supporters decrying any attempt to prevent his participation as a “democratic outrage.” The internal dynamics of the Labour Party will likely continue to shift as the pressures mount in the lead-up to the elections.

As the political landscape evolves, the implications of Mandelson’s comments and the ongoing electoral challenges for Labour point to a critical juncture for the party’s future direction.

The upcoming period will be pivotal not only for Labour’s internal politics but also for its standing with the electorate, underscoring the weight of economic appeals in a time of uncertainty.
