Labour Together faces scrutiny over funding investigation into journalists by US firm

Sir Keir Starmer is facing scrutiny after it was revealed that his allies at Labour Together financed US investigators to probe into the backgrounds of British journalists. The lobbying firm received £36,000 for this purpose, reports BritPanorama.

The investigation by Labour Together was initiated in response to scrutiny over party donations following a report from the Sunday Times. Concerns have been raised regarding the methods employed, particularly as the dossier compiled attempted to falsely link two Sunday Times journalists to Russia.

Josh Simons, now a Cabinet Office minister, commissioned the work during his tenure at Labour Together. Portions of the resulting dossier were even shared with the UK’s GCHQ, although the agency opted against pursuing an investigation.

Labour MP Stella Creasy expressed her dismay, stating she was “genuinely shocked” by the actions taken. Conservative commentators have echoed these sentiments, with Nick Timothy condemning the use of foreign lobbyists to target journalists who were investigating Labour’s finances. He asserted that Starmer must address serious questions regarding the issue.

Matt Goodwin, a presenter and Reform party candidate, labelled the situation as “utterly disgraceful”, criticizing Labour for orchestrating what he termed a “dirty smear campaign” against the media.

This development raises significant questions about the practices within Labour Together and highlights ongoing tensions between political entities and journalistic oversight in the UK.

Such revelations are critical in understanding the dynamics of transparency and accountability in political institutions, particularly as they navigate public scrutiny and media relations.
