Tories criticize Starmer over social media violence in schools
Sir Keir Starmer is being accused of being “asleep at the wheel” as social media continues to fuel violence and crime in schools, according to Conservative Party representatives, reports BritPanorama.
Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott has criticized the Prime Minister for his failure to swiftly impose a ban on social media access for under-16s, amid reports of more than 50 “school wars” being promoted on popular apps. The situation has prompted Scotland Yard to initiate Operation Cedarfield to address escalating concerns.
Authorities have noted that viral posts from anonymous accounts are inciting students to bring weapons, including knives and scissors, to schools to engage in pre-planned fights. These posts encourage participants to be violent and share recordings of their altercations online for perceived rewards.
Schools have responded by notifying parents to monitor their children’s app usage closely. In light of these events, Trott described the situation as “utterly terrifying” and emphasized the pressing need to shield children from social media’s negative influences.
“Keir Starmer and the Labour government are asleep at the wheel while social media fuels crime and violence in our schools,” she stated, reiterating the urgency for actionable measures rather than prolonged consultations. “We need decisive action now to protect our children.”
The Prime Minister has committed to launching a consultation regarding a potential ban on social media for users under 16. He expressed willingness to enact such a ban within months, contingent on the feedback from parents and experts. However, critics highlight that the consultation has yet to commence.
Commander Neerav Patel from the Metropolitan Police affirmed their awareness of the concerning social media activity and confirmed ongoing communication with schools in several London boroughs to provide reassurance. He stated that officers would maintain a strong presence near educational institutions and respond rigorously to any incidents of violence or disorder. Additionally, measures have been taken to disable several social media accounts linked to threats or violence.
