Tory leader warns of new wave of small boat crossings amid unrest in Iran

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch posed with Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge in an armoured vehicle after their party warned that war in Iran will spark a new wave of small boat crossings, reports BritPanorama.

The Conservatives expressed concerns that escalating instability in the Middle East could lead to an influx of migrants seeking refuge in Europe, with fears that some might claim to be Iranian to enhance their asylum prospects in the UK.

On this matter, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stated that many illegal migrants in France are likely to attempt crossing the English Channel while posing as Iranians, believing it would improve their chances of being granted asylum.

In a direct response, a Home Office spokesperson remarked, “We are closely monitoring the fast-moving situation in Iran.” The government is aware that Iran remains one of the leading sources of asylum applications in the UK, with a recorded 7,419 claims last year.

Ms Badenoch’s recent photo opportunity at the Stockport HQ of defence contractor KNDS drew parallels with a historic moment involving former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who famously rode in a tank in Germany in 1986, reinforcing Conservative support for the Armed Forces.

Amy Pope, director-general of the International Organization for Migration, cautioned that ongoing conflict in the region could cause increased migration. She noted that European leaders were eager to adopt a more comprehensive approach to avoid a recurrence of the migration crisis witnessed during 2015-16.

The implications of the situation in Iran merit close observation, not only due to the humanitarian aspects but also regarding potential policy shifts and responses from governments across Europe and the UK.
