Kemi Badenoch has warned that Britain is experiencing its most significant vulnerability in 400 years, pledging to initiate an unprecedented peacetime rearmament programme, reports BritPanorama.
During her address, the Conservative Party leader stated that the UK has been “prioritising benefits over bullets” and is facing a critical moment to reassess its military commitments. She described the situation as a “national disgrace,” criticizing Prime Minister Keir Starmer for failing to secure the necessary funds to bolster the military.
Badenoch’s remarks came at the London Defence Conference where she outlined her vision for increasing defence spending. She emphasized that Britain is ill-prepared for current geopolitical threats, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Iran, which highlighted significant deficiencies in the nation’s military readiness.
She remarked, “We are not ready,” underscoring the UK’s inability to deploy a warship to the region as missiles targeted allies and military bases. Badenoch attributed the current state of affairs to longstanding policy failures that have eroded the UK’s defence capabilities, claiming that defence spending fell continuously from 1989 to 2022.
Underlining the implications of this weakness, she criticized the government for claiming readiness for war. “For a proud nation used to stamping its influence on the world, Britain’s lack of readiness has been shocking,” she noted.
Badenoch indicated that the defence strategy proposed by the government requires urgent action, and she condemned the failure to publish a clear investment plan to address the issues outlined in a strategic defence review released last year.
Her alternative plan would involve reallocating funds from welfare and certain environmental initiatives to enhance military spending. This includes recruiting additional military personnel and establishing a new Sovereign Defence Fund, aimed at ensuring the UK is better positioned to defend itself in the future.
In response to her proposals, a spokesperson from Downing Street criticized Badenoch, stating she was part of the government during a period when the Armed Forces faced significant cuts. They reiterated that the current administration is committed to the largest increase in defence spending since the Cold War.
