Keir Starmer threatens action against Elon Musk's X over deepfake concerns

UK government takes action against deepfake content on X

SIR Keir Starmer has threatened Elon Musk’s X with action over concerns its AI tool is being used to create sexualised deepfake images, including of children in minimal clothing, reports BritPanorama.

X claims it actively addresses illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, “by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and working with local governments and law enforcement as necessary.” The platform’s measures come under increasing scrutiny as allegations of inadequate safeguards persist.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has called for urgent measures, stating that X must fully comply with regulations outlined in the Online Safety Act. She has voiced her support for Ofcom to take “any enforcement action” deemed necessary in response to these concerns.

In addition, the service provided by Musk’s Grok has informed users that only paid subscribers can access certain functionalities involving sensitive content. This move has raised further questions regarding transparency and accountability in content moderation practices on X.

The issue gained added urgency following concerns regarding the rising use of AI capabilities for harmful purposes. Various advocacy groups have urged the government to ensure that robust frameworks are in place to prevent misuse of technology while simultaneously safeguarding users’ rights.

The ongoing developments highlight a critical junction in the discourse surrounding digital safety, governmental oversight, and corporate responsibility in the UK’s online landscape.

In a rapidly changing digital environment, the complexities of AI and social media governance will continue to challenge authorities striving to balance innovation with an obligation to protect vulnerable populations.
