Starmer faces rebellion over anonymous attacks from Downing Street

SIR Keir Starmer risks his MPs going “on strike” following anonymous attacks from Downing Street, reports BritPanorama.

Government sources indicate that several backbenchers have refused to comply with requests to attend debates in the Commons. This discontent among Labour MPs has surfaced amid allegations of a civil war within the party, stoked by claims that Wes Streeting was plotting a leadership coup.

Adding to the unrest, a Cabinet Minister was quoted in the Times as describing the new 2024 intake of MPs as “feral,” which has incensed many within Labour. Starmer attempted to quell the discord by asserting that none of his No10 team were behind the briefings that have provoked this internal strife.

During a visit to North Wales, Starmer declared, “Any briefing against ministers is completely unacceptable.” He emphasized his longstanding position of disapproving such behavior, stating, “I have made it very clear to my team. I have been assured that no briefing against ministers was done from No 10.”

The Prime Minister was forced to issue a telephone apology to Streeting following the controversies surrounding the briefings. Streeting, the Health Secretary, refrained from engaging with the “juvenile” comments made against him and remarked, “Don’t know, don’t care,” about the origins of the statements.

Streeting further dismissed the incidents as “yesterday’s news” and irrelevant to the public, asserting that such matters do not resonate with voters. Meanwhile, Starmer has assured that he retains full confidence in his top aide, Morgan McSweeny, despite calls for his dismissal.

The Prime Minister has committed to a leak inquiry to investigate the source of the damning accusations against the Cabinet Minister. In parallel, Labour party chair Anna Turley confirmed that Starmer is investigating the origins of the attacks, stating, “He is going to investigate and we’ll see what happens as a consequence of that.” She reiterated that Starmer did not endorse the briefing and is determined to prevent such occurrences in the future.

As tensions mount within Labour, the party faces dismal poll ratings, trailing behind Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. Starmer’s leadership is now under scrutiny, with speculation about the potential ramifications of this internal discord.

Such turmoil signals a critical juncture for the Labour Party, which must navigate not only internal strife but also a challenging political landscape. The party’s actions in response to these developments will likely shape its future trajectory and public perception.
