Starmer opens door for Xi’s UK visit amid China controversy
Sir Keir Starmer has risked fresh controversy surrounding China by suggesting the possibility of hosting President Xi Jinping in the UK. The Prime Minister described recent discussions with the Beijing leader as the beginning of a new “sophisticated” relationship between the nations, reports BritPanorama.
During a three-hour meeting, no assurances were given that China would address its ongoing issues of espionage and human rights abuses. Nevertheless, Downing Street characterized the meeting as constructive, noting some progress towards lifting Chinese sanctions imposed on UK MPs.
Following the talks, No 10 indicated that a future visit by Xi could be on the table, with a spokesperson for Starmer affirming that a reset in relations with China is in the interest of the British public and businesses. When asked about a formal invite to Xi, the spokesperson reiterated the PM’s commitment to regular dialogues and a more engaged relationship with China.
Sir Keir outlined a strategy for engagement, comparing the complexities of understanding China to the story of blind men and an elephant, emphasizing the need for broader and deeper connections.
